This article explores the interface between earliest church history and its literary remains, especially the Synoptic Gospels. It is argued that the factionalised community in Jerusalem was more central to the production of the Gospels that is generally thought, and that those Gospels and Q may therefore be of an earlier date than the consensus allows.
